Very well written article. I agree with all points on the whole. I for one have invested at least 2,000,000le here in the past 3 years. Buying property and setting up a business, I employ Egyptian and foreign people based on my compny's needs and their ability to fulfill the role. I do not wish to be forced to leave because I can not work. If I had known that would happen I would never have invested so much money here!

I came here to live and work with the Egyptian people, not to rape the country and take money out of it. If I can't renew my work permit then I can no longer employ people here either, and that would be an unneccessary loss to the people I employ and the economy!
Work permits should be issued on merit, like a lot of other countries practise.
To cancel them for foreigners is short sighted, there will be an adverse affect on tourism if the tourists can't have some people speaking their language. The dive industry is a classic example, who will teach the German, French, Spanish, Italian, Scandanavian, etc etc people who come here wanting to learn to dive? Same for the hotels, tourists like having people from their own country, if not with their own language, looking after them.
Over time I am sure Egyptians will be able to fulfill a lot of these roles but until then what happens?
And as another contributer here said, employers should have the right to select an employee based on merit, ability, knowledge, reliability, presentation, language skills etc etc. As is done throughout the modern world!

Very good article.

As long you rely on tourists you need native speaking people. It's sad to say about my own country but especially German people quite often expect German speaking people. But that is only one side.

Only as a native you know the best way to address your own people in case of advertising for their needs. This has nothing to do with better or less qualified. It's just the fact that you once lived there and know the "dos and don'ts" about your country.

One big problem is always the the loiudest shouting people get all the attention and the press is rather publishing some stuff of some "scaremongers". Scandals just sell better then "normal thinking people" - that's boring ...

Well said Nader,

I love Egypt, and I love Sharm, I have lived here for many years and have seen all that you describe. I sincerely hope that the Ministry of Labour recognise the need for foreigners here in Sharm and allow many foreign workers here, at least for the next few years until suitable replacements can be trained from the local population.

Many Regards

It can be rather impressive exactly how from time to time the simplest approach changes straight into a complete page, don't you think? You draft very well, and I only wish I have a bit of that skill to write alone! - Diane
